More than 130 Penn State student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Ten laurels

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- A total of 135 Penn State student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten laurels for the spring/at-large sports to close out the 2014-15 academic year and push its all-time total past 5,000 honorees. The total is just one shy of the school record of 136 in the spring/at-large period, set in 2013-14.

The 135 spring/at-large honorees brings Penn State’s final 2014-15 total to 277 Academic All-Big Ten selections, third highest in school history.  The Nittany Lions’ record of 296 academic all-conference honorees was set in 2012-13 and the second-highest mark was 287 in 2013-14.

Penn State has earned a total of 5,041 Academic All-Big Ten honorees during its 22 years of full membership in the conference.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

Women’s track and field senior standout Katie Rodden was one of 13 Big Ten student-athletes with a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average for the spring/at-large sports.

The women’s lacrosse team, directed by coach Missy Doherty, led the way among Penn State spring/at-large teams with 17 Academic All-Big Ten honorees. The women’s track and field team, led by first-year head coach John Gondak, was next with 15 honorees.

Three Penn State teams led the Big Ten in their respective sports. The women’s golf team, guided by coach Denise St. Pierre, led the conference with nine Academic All-Big Ten selections and the women tennis team, directed by first-year head coach Chris Cagle, topped the Big Ten with eight. The women’s ice hockey team, led by head coach Josh Brandwene, was tied for the conference lead with 14 Academic All-Big Ten honorees. 

The men’s golf team, directed by coach Greg Nye and the men’s tennis squad, led by coach Jeff Zinn, both tied for second among Big Ten schools with Academic All-Big Ten eight honorees.
