The people have spoken. With almost 2,100 votes cast across multiple social media platforms and an online voting form, the Penn State Berkey Creamery’s anniversary flavor is birthday cake.

Voting kicked off May 24 and ended June 7. The three flavor choices, birthday cake, strawberry cheesecake with graham crackers and red velvet, were showcased on Penn State’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. Voting also took place through Twitter with the hashtag #Creamery150 as well as an online voting form through the Creamery. More than 5,300 total votes were submitted, tweeted and posted over the two-week timeframe.

The newest addition to the menu, a yellow cake batter ice cream with blue frosting swirl and frosted cookie freckles, will make its debut at the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts in July.

A contest to name the newest flavor will hit social media and the Creamery’s website later this summer.

The Penn State Berkey Creamery is teaming up with the College of Agricultural Sciences to help celebrate 150th anniversary. A limited edition Flavor Passport will be available to keep track of all of the flavors patrons have tried; a new website will launch for the Creamery later this summer; an attempt at breaking the Creamery’s record of most ice cream sold during Arts Fest; multiple socials, speaking arrangements and an artifact exhibit in the University Library in early fall are included in the festivities.

The Creamery, established in 1865, also produces cheese, milk, yogurt and more. The anniversary marks the many years of contributions to food science and years of dairy production. For more about the Penn State Berkey Creamery, visit: creamery.psu.edu.
