Upward Bound Math and Science summer program kicks off June 13

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program’s 2015 Summer STEM Academy will be held June 13 through July 24. This intensive residential program will welcome 36 ninth through 11th grade students from Harrisburg, ASPIRA Olney Charter in Philadelphia, Reading and Woodland Hills high schools.

Classes and activities offered during the Summer STEM Academy include coursework in math, science, research writing, computer skills, public speaking and library science. Students are assigned to one of 16 research teams and will receive intensive lab training and mentoring from faculty and graduate student mentors with the College of Agricultural Sciences Summer Experience (CASSE), the Summer Research Experience in the Eberly College of Science (SEECoS), and the Summer Experience in Earth and Mineral Sciences (SEEMS). At the conclusion of the program, students will understand how to conduct collegiate-level research and give a juried presentation on their findings.

The UBMS program at Penn State is a federally funded program from the U.S. Department of Education. The goals of this program are to:

-- Strengthen the math and science skills of low-income, first-generation potential college students;

-- Encourage these students to pursue postsecondary degrees in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) professions; and

-- Support graduation with a baccalaureate degree in a math and science profession.
