A television special produced by Penn State students who participated in an international reporting class that traveled to Hong Kong during the spring semester made its debut online and includes nearly 42 minutes of feature stories and in-depth reporting from the country.

“Centre County Report in Hong Kong” features the work of 24 students who made the trip and were members of COMM 402 International Reporting. They traveled to Hong Kong over spring break and compiled stories on the island’s culture, economics, people and politics.

Prior to traveling, the 24 students prepared for the trip and afterward they put together the stories. Some stories and photos were shared as part of a partnership with McClatchy Newspapers while broadcast stories were prepared exclusively for the student-produced online and TV broadcast.

Four faculty members from the Department of Journalism made the trip: Tony Barbieri, the Foster Professor of Writing and Editing, Bu Zhong, an associate professor, Curt Chandler, a senior lecturer, and Katie O’Toole, a lecturer. Dean Marie Hardin accompanied the team as well.

In 2014, the international reporting class visited Cuba. That group produced “Centre County Report in Cuba,” which was named the nation’s Outstanding Magazine Show at the 36th College Television Awards, conducted by the Television Academy Foundation in April. The honor is the equivalent of an Emmy Award for college television.

“Centre County Report in Hong Kong,” along with a collection of work from the trip, can be found at ComMedia.psu.edu online.
