Penn State Harrisburg student featured in film about the rise of LGBT in Vietnam

Penn State Harrisburg graduate student, Tam Nguyen, of Vietnam is featured in the documentary film, "Red Over The Rainbow," detailing the rise of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community in Vietnam. The film will have its U.S. premiere at 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at Penn State Harrisburg, in the Oliver LaGrone Cultural Arts Center - W132 Olmsted Building.

The film follows the Gay Pride event, Viet Pride, as well as people from the LGBT community to share their life stories, struggling for their rights in a country with heavy traditions.

With Vietnamese officials declaring they are considering recognizing same sex marriage, Vietnam might be the first country in Asia to provide gender equity laws.

Nguyen is highlighted in the film and played a large role in the making of the film. A longtime supporter of the LGBT community in Vietnam, she is a founder of Viet Pride, which advocates for an end to prejudice, discrimination, shame, and invisibility faced by LGBT people.
