New report finds Pennsylvania has strong research presence

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Pennsylvania is ranked fifth nationally when it comes to research impact and fourth nationally when it comes to research in agricultural and biological sciences, according to a new report, “America’s Knowledge Economy.”

The report from the Council of State Governments (CSG) and Elsevier, a publisher of research, looks at how states are doing when it comes to research and publications and the role of public universities. Pennsylvania received strong ratings on several fronts, including falling in the top five for number of publications and 8th among states for research strength in earth and planetary science.

Penn State has had a consistently strong research presence, with $813 million in research expenditures in 2013-14, including $501 million in federal funding.
