Cael Sanderson, Penn State’s head wrestling coach, is headed to the area to take part in Penn State York’s seventh annual clay shoot event beginning at noon Thursday, April 23. Participants are invited to take aim and shoot for a day of fun that also benefits Penn State York students.  Sanderson will be a celebrity shooter and participants will have the opportunity “beat the coach.”  Following the afternoon of shooting, Sanderson also will share a few words at the tailgate event.

The clay shoot takes place at Central Penn Sporting Clays (CPSC) in Wellsville, Pennsylvania.  The event is from noon to 4 p.m. and benefits Penn State York’s athletic programs. Funds raised will help provide new equipment, help pay for pre-season training programs, and additional travel expenses for post season play. Penn State York offers five intercollegiate sports, baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, and women’s volleyball, and a variety of club or intramural sports.  Learn more about Penn State York athletics by visiting the website.

The schedule for the day includes clinics for novice shooters at 11:30 a.m., registration, flurry, archery, and lunch beginning at noon, warm-up from noon to 1 p.m., a shotgun start at 1 p.m., and a tailgate along with awards and prizes at 3:30 p.m. The novice clinic is with Andrea Seefeldt Knight, an experienced shooter and the 2013 Maryland State Champion, Lady and A Class.

Sanderson, an avid supporter of collegiate athletics, is serving as a celebrity shooter and offers participants an added challenge to the day.  He has just completed his sixth season as head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team. The veteran head coach already has four National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and four Big Ten titles in hand. He has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year four times and was named the 2013 National Coach of the Year (his second such honor).  In only six seasons as Penn State’s coach, Sanderson has led the Nittany Lions to five straight Southern Scuffle titles (including this year’s), two B1G dual meet titles (co), four Big Ten Championships, four NCAA Championships, collected 31 All-Americans, eight national champions, three Gorriaran winners, two NCAA tourney OWs and two Hodge Trophy winners. Coach Sanderson, who has coached 46 total All-Americans and 11 total national champions (including his three years at Iowa State) now sports a 126-24-2 dual meet mark in this, his ninth year as a head coach.   He is 82-14-2 at Penn State.Individuals can be a shooter for $95, which includes 50 clays or $135, for 100 clays. Foam ear plugs, lunch, and tailgate, contest participation (including flurry, archery), and additional contests on the course are also included in the price.  Participants receive an event gift and team photo as well.

Sponsorships are still available for businesses. For a brochure or more information on the event, visit www.yk.psu.edu/clayshoot , call 717-718-6781, or email iona@psu.edu.
