Penn State Lewistown Center to honor local nurse

LEWISTOWN, Pa. — The Penn State Lewistown Center will honor a local nurse who has demonstrated exceptional patient care and a commitment to giving back to the community.

Nominations for the new Penn State Lewistown Center Award for Nursing Excellence will be accepted through April 30. The winner will be announced Thursday, May 14, at the Nursing Career Expo at the Penn State Lewistown Center, 152 E. Market St.

“From Lewistown to Mifflintown to Richfield, the nurses of the Juniata Valley strive to give the best care, day in and day out, to our loved ones,” said Tom Walker, director of the Penn State Lewistown Center. “This award is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to a nurse in our area for that hard work.”

Nominees must work as a nurse in Mifflin County or Juniata County, have two years’ work experience and have professional direct-care contact with patients.

Anyone can nominate a nurse for the award. Self-nominations will not be accepted.

The Penn State Lewistown Center has long provided local residents access to a nursing education.

Local residents with an R.N. diploma in nursing can work toward their bachelor of science degree in nursing through courses offered at the Lewistown Center. Residents then can finish the requirements for the bachelor’s degree online through Penn State World Campus.

Through other educational partnerships, the Lewistown Center has helped local residents fulfill requirements for their R.N. and L.P.N. nursing programs.
