IST Alumni Spotlight: Yosua makes data intuitive, fun for the consumer

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Daniel Yosua, IST Class of 2013 and subject of the Information Sciences and Technology Alumni Spotlight, is happily working to shape interactions between people and technology.

Yosua’s passion for manipulating analytical data into easily understandable information patterns is what drives him as a business intelligence reporting analyst at Blue Mountain Quality Resources in State College, where he’s worked since 2014. It’s also why he loves making a game-play experience more intuitive or fun, he said.

As a co-founder and designer for YosuatreegamesLLC, a mobile gaming company he founded in 2013 with his brother, Yosua uses creativity and design expertise to create and fine tune indie games. Their first project, a game called "eVubble Lite," has evolved into "eVubble," an updated version due for release this spring with “more polish than the lite version.” Yosua said they’ve learned a lot since beginning the game design process and hopes that people who are familiar with the earlier version will be impressed with the improvements they’ve made.

As for his work at Blue Mountain Quality Resources, Yosua converts analytical data into SQL reports designed to simplify data and help make it useful to the companies that utilize such information, most notably in the life sciences industry. His creativity and ability to distill technical data into reports that are easily digested is simply another way that Yosua hopes to create ease of use for individuals using technology. He’s able to do so, in part, because of group collaboration during his IST education at Penn State, something that Yosua said was extremely helpful.

“I think that an IST degree really helps prepare you to work with others,” Yousa said. “By the time I graduated, I was much more willing to rely on others and found that I could use that initial frustration to motivate myself to be a better collaborator,” he said of group projects. “In short, IST prepares you for the workplace, because no individual gets very far alone.”

When he’s not working on SQL reports or fine-tuning games, Yosua can be found playing ice hockey with the Nittany Hockey League, and pursuing other sports — both indoors and outside — around State College.
