Commission for Women to offer bystander intervention training

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Commission for Women’s Personal Safety and Sexual Assault Awareness Issues Committee will hold Bystander Intervention Training from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, in Paterno Library’s Mann Assembly Room. The goal of the training is to educate, empower and mobilize members of the University community to safely identify and respond in risky or abusive situations.

The program will focus on awareness, education and skills building. It will begin with an educational piece on group behavior and social norms. Scenarios and active discussions addressing alcohol use, and sexual and relationship violence will also be presented. Finally, because there may be obstacles that make it difficult to intervene, intervention techniques will be explored and practiced.

The training is free and open to all interested students, faculty and staff. Pizza and soft drinks will be provided. Although it is not required, RSVP to Megan Marshall at meh5002@psu.edu by Wednesday, April 8, to assist with the pizza order.

The Commission for Women was established in 1981 to serve as an advisory group to the President of the University on issues affecting women and to guide the University in its efforts to enhance the status of women at Penn State. Learn more about the commission at http://equity.psu.edu/cfw.
