TIAA-CREF CEO Roger Ferguson to visit Penn State March 31

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — TIAA-CREF President and CEO Roger W. Ferguson Jr. will visit Penn State’s University Park campus for the second time during his tenure to meet with faculty, staff and students on Tuesday, March 31.

Ferguson will meet with business faculty and select students throughout the day. Both sessions will be recorded and available at a future date for other members of the Penn State community to view. In the student session, Ferguson will discuss financial literacy and financial wellness, focusing on topics like student loan debt, budgeting and credit cards.

Prior to joining TIAA-CREF — the leading provider of retirement services in the academic, research, medical and cultural fields and a Fortune 100 financial services organization — in 2008, Ferguson was head of financial services for Swiss Re, Chairman of Swiss Re America Holding Corporation and a member of the company’s executive committee.

Ferguson also is the former vice chairman of the Board of Governors of the U.S. Federal Reserve System. He represented the Federal Reserve on several international policy groups and served on key Federal Reserve System committees, including Payment System Oversight, Reserve Bank Operations and Supervision and Regulation. As the only governor in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 11, 2001, Ferguson led the Fed’s initial response to the terrorist attacks, taking actions that kept the U.S. financial system functioning while reassuring the global financial community that the U.S. economy would not be paralyzed.

“Penn State has an excellent working relationship with TIAA-CREF, and to have someone of Roger Ferguson’s caliber not only leading the company, but to also be willing to come and spend a day at Penn State is very exciting,” said Susan Basso, Penn State vice president for human resources. “He is an incredibly impressive individual, and I am confident that individuals will find their time with him to be very dynamic and informative.”

TIAA-CREF is Penn State’s sole record-keeper for its 403b retirement plan.

Ferguson will also be meeting with President Barron, other University leaders and the Penn State Retirement Oversight Committee, a group chaired by David Gray, Penn State senior vice president for finance and business, consisting of faculty and staff with financial expertise who have fiduciary responsibility over the TIAA-CREF plan.

“Many employees might not even know we have one, but given our fiduciary responsibilities it’s a critically important committee that is overseeing TIAA-CREF’s investments on behalf of our employees,” Basso said.
