UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Amy Freeman, assistant dean of engineering diversity at Penn State, is the recipient of a 2015 Council of College Multicultural Leadership (CCML) Way Paver Award.

She is one of nine who will be honored at the fourth annual Way Paver Awards luncheon April 1 at the Nittany Lion Inn on the University Park campus.

Established in 2011, the award honors those "who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to diversity and the creation of an inclusive community, positively enhanced student life and the climate throughout the University and local community, and who have motivated others through their leadership and impeccable character."

Prior to joining Penn State in 2000, Freeman served as director of human and cultural diversity at Lock Haven University. Her background also includes seven years of experience in construction management, first as a construction engineer at Rockwell International in Hanford, Washington, and then as owner of two construction management firms in Lock Haven.

In 2006, Freeman was elected president of the National Association of Multicultural Engineering Program Advocates.

She is the recipient of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) 2010 Golden Torch Lifetime Achievement in Academia and Minority Engineering Program Director of the Year Awards.

Freeman holds a bachelor's degree in construction management from Washington State University and a master's degree in architectural engineering and doctorate in workforce education and development from Penn State.

CCML comprises the multicultural directors and deans of the academic colleges and the senior director of the Office of Graduate Educational Equity Programs at University Park. The mission of the council is to lead efforts to recruit and retain a diverse student body and to assist in the development of strategic plans supporting the Framework to Foster Diversity.
