Talk on perennial grains, cover crops will kick off cropping systems symposium

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Sieglinde Snapp, a professor of soils and cropping systems ecology and associate director of the Center for Global Change at Michigan State University, will present a talk March 27 titled “Cover Crops and Perennial Grains for Future Cropping Systems.” Her talk, which will take place at 12:20 p.m. in 101 Agricultural Sciences and Industries Building, is part of the 2015 Sustainable Ag Seminar Series organized by the Sustainable Ag Working Group in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences.

The lecture also will serve as the keynote address for the fifth annual Sustainable Cropping Systems Symposium, a forum for members of the Penn State community involved in sustainable cropping systems research to share research results and plan collaborative activities.

During her talk, Snapp will describe her efforts to develop cover crops and perennial grains that will allow farmers to conserve soil and water without reducing yields. She and her colleagues currently are studying perennial wheat, which potentially can be grown for grain and fodder while also providing environmental benefits such as soil conservation.

Snapp will share some early results from her field experiments with the perennial wheat genotypes currently available, which show dramatic reductions in nitrogen loss and improvements in soil organic matter pools. She also will describe her long-term field crop experiments on multiple-use cover crops.

Following Snapp’s lecture, the Sustainable Cropping Systems Symposium will continue in the first-floor Jury Space of the Stuckeman Family Building from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sessions will include oral presentations from various sustainable cropping research projects, a poster session and breakout discussion groups. The event is free and open to the public, and advanced registration is encouraged.

The Sustainable Ag Seminar Series is an annual series sponsored by the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Pennsylvania State Program. The series is organized and hosted by the Penn State Sustainable Ag Working Group, a multidisciplinary initiative established in 2002 that brings together College of Agricultural Sciences faculty and staff, farmers and representatives from community-based organizations that are involved with sustainable agriculture.
