Instructor Kerri Nelson's Nursing 350 class (Professional Role Development II) at Penn State Hershey has been discussing genetics and disease over the last several weeks. In support of Rare Disease Day on Feb. 28, several students wore jeans ("genes") to spread awareness as part of the Global Genes Project's Wear That You Care campaign.

"It's amazing to know how many people are truly affected by rare diseases," said Nelson, whose son was diagnosed two years ago with mosaic trisomy 22, a rare chromosome disorder.

Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February each year to raise awareness about rare diseases and their impact on patients' lives. For more information, view the official video.
