Penn State Philharmonic to perform March 1

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State Philharmonic Orchestra will presents its first concert of the spring semester at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 1, in Eisenhower Auditorium. Program highlights include Manuel de Falla's suite from his ballet "The Three Cornered Hat" and the performance of a movement from Samuel Barber's violin concerto by Philharmonic Concerto Competition student winner Emily Karosas. The Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Gerardo Edelstein, assisted by graduate orchestral conducting student Santiago E. Osorio.

Tickets are $12 for general admission and $4 students. Advance tickets for School of Music concerts in Eisenhower Auditorium are available at a 40-percent discount. There is no limit on the number of tickets that can be purchased. (Tickets purchased on the the day of the concert are not eligible.) Tickets are available at the Eisenhower Ticket Center (814-863-0255 or 800-ARTS-TIX).

Karosas is a second year graduate violin student of James Lyon and the recipient of a University Graduate Fellowship. From Bloomsburg, she is the daughter of Ann Karosas.

Emily also received her bachelor of music degree from Penn State. During her time at University Park, she has participated in the Philharmonic Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Baroque Ensemble and various string quartets. She has also taught string techniques and private lessons to non-majors. In addition to being Philharmonic Concerto Competition winner, she is also the Music Teacher's National Association (MTNA) Eastern Division winner in the Young Artist category, and she will compete at the national finals March 21 to 25.

Emily is an active member of the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra and the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra, and she also performs yearly with the Music at Penn’s Woods Festival orchestra. After graduation, she intends to continue her involvement with the State College Suzuki Program before applying to doctoral programs in 2016.

The 90-member Philharmonic presents five to six full concerts per academic year. Off campus, the Philharmonic has performed throughout the northeastern United States, including concerts at New York City's Carnegie Hall, Pittsburgh’s Heinz Hall, Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center, and the MENC Eastern Division Conference in Baltimore. In March 2006, the orchestra participated by invitation in the sixth International Orchestra Festival in Zaragoza, Spain. The Philharmonic’s repertoire from recent years has included works by Brahms, Debussy, Dvorak, Stravinsky, Beethoven, Mahler, Vaughan Williams, Rachmaninoff and Wagner. Enrollment, open to all University Park students, is by audition at the beginning of each semester.
