Berks County Chapter Alumni make contribution to THON

READING, Pa. — The Berks County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association (PSAA) will present a check for approximately $6,000 to the Berks THON organization at their dancer send-off on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, from 11:30 a.m.–1 p.m. in Tully’s, Perkins Student Center.

The donation comes from Reading Royals Night, which was sponsored by the Berks County Chapter of the PSAA and the Reading Royals on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2015. Five dollars from every ticket sold through the event website was donated, and the Royals’ players all wore special Penn State Ice Hockey-themed jerseys that were autographed and auctioned off after the game.

The event was attended by a busload of students from Penn State Berks and Schuylkill, who joined the Berks County Chapter to support this worthwhile event. In total, more than 300 alumni, faculty, staff and students attended. In the five-year history of the Chapter’s Reading Royals Night, they have raised over $46,000 for THON.

Shawn Hinkle, PSAA Treasurer and event chairperson, said, “As alumni, our Chapter is very proud to continue our support of THON, and in particular the Berks THON students and Four Diamond families in Berks County. What started as a simple idea of having an alumni group night at the Reading Royals 5 years ago has turned into an event that has brought together our entire Penn State family and enabled us to raise an amazing amount of money to aid in the fight against pediatric cancer."

From Friday, Feb. 20 to Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, Penn State students from every campus will gather at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus for THON, the 46-hour dance marathon that benefits the Four Diamonds Fund, supporting families battling pediatric cancer.
