Professor of English receives honorary doctorate

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Cheryl Glenn, Liberal Arts Research Professor of English and Women's Studies, recently received an honorary doctorate from Örebro University, Sweden, for her contributions to the humanities, specifically to the study of gender and rhetoric. A faculty member in the College of the Liberal Arts, she also is director of the Program in Writing and Rhetoric.

A leading scholar-teacher of rhetoric and writing, Glenn focuses on women’s contributions to rhetoric as well as rhetorics of silence and listening. She has authored five scholarly books, numerous textbooks, chapters and articles; co-edits two book series; and has delivered lectures and workshops around the globe. Glenn has earned three fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), book awards from Choice and the Society for the Study of Early Modern Women, five university teaching and mentoring awards and various visiting professorships.  Glenn serves in a variety of leadership capacities at Penn State and for the National Council of Teachers of English, Coalition of Women Scholars in the History of Rhetoric and Composition, Modern Language Association, Rhetoric Society of America and NEH. She serves on the editorial board of numerous scholarly journals.She was one of four faculty scholars awarded with honorary doctorates from Örebro University. In addition to delivering a public lecture on "Rhetoric's Power and Possibility," Glenn was selected to speak on behalf of the honorary doctorates at the banquet following the awards ceremony.
