UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State School of Visual Arts (SoVA) is presenting the annual Foundations Area exhibition, "In the Beginning ...," through Dec. 12 at the Edwin W. Zoller Gallery.

The exhibition, which includes drawings, sculpture, installation and stop-motion animation opened with a reception and collaborative wall drawing Dec. 8 in the gallery.

"In the Beginning ..." reveals a range of work from the fall semester's Art 110s and Art 111 courses. The energy and effort that students put into SoVA’s Foundations program is evident throughout the exhibition, which provides a window into the first-year student experience.

The Foundations Area comprises two primary courses, Ideas as Images (Art 110s) and Ideas as Objects (Art 111). All incoming students in the School of Visual Arts take both courses, which serve to form a basis of visual knowledge in both two and three dimensions, introducing students to fundamental methods of making and thinking in an environment of exploration and growth. Observation, exploration, translation and problem solving are the focus of varied assignments in multiple materials.
