Penn State Mont Alto to offer American Mathematics Competitions

On Feb. 25, Penn State Mont Alto will offer the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) on campus. The Mont Alto campus is the only public site for the AMC in the area and one of only five in Pennsylvania, including Penn State New Kensington. The AMC is a national mathematics contest aimed at talented secondary students with the goal of “strengthening the mathematical capabilities of our nation’s youth.”

The AMC is administered by the Mathematical Association of America and students who perform above a certain level in the contest will be invited to participate in additional competitions up to and including the International Mathematics Olympiad.

Two versions of the test will be offered:

-- The AMC 10 is designed for students in a program leading to a high school diploma, younger than 17.5 years of age on the day of the contest, and not enrolled in grades 11 or 12 or equivalent.

-- The AMC 12 is designed for students in a program leading to a high school diploma, younger than 19.5 years of age on the day of the contest.

Both contests are free but participants must register. For more information, contact Penn State Mont Alto assistant professor of mathematics Ermek Nurkhaidarov at esn1@psu.edu.
