Washington earns second Big Ten weekly honor

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- After helping Penn State women's volleyball to a pair of wins at home last weekend, freshman Haleigh Washington (Colorado Springs, Colo.) has earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. The award is the second consecutive weekly honor for the rookie middle blocker.

Washington highlighted a 2-0 weekend at home with back-to-back double-digit kill performances. Against Rutgers, she led the team with 13 kills on .688 hitting, adding two blocks, one ace and one dig. The next night, she returned to the court to finish tied for second on the team with 10 kills on 13 errorless swings, while also finishing second the team with five blocks.

Averaging a team-high 3.83 kills per set, she also led the squad with 23 kills. Defensively, she finished tied for third on the team with 1.17 blocks per set on the week. Since earning her way into the starting lineup on the road at Iowa (10/4), Washington's recorded nine consecutive multi-block performances, amassing at least five blocks in five of the last 10 matches.

Washington and the rest of the Penn State women's volleyball team (25-3, 12-2) swept Iowa in Rec Hall on Wednesday night.
