UPPER BURRELL, Pa. -- Penn State New Kensington will host a series of open houses and special admissions events during November that are geared to veterans, adult learners and traditional students. The open house events highlight all of the campus' academic programs. Complementing the open house events is Application Day on Nov. 10. To register for any admissions event, call the Admissions Office at 724-334-LION or 888-968-PAWS, or register on the Admissions Events web page.

Veterans/Adult Learners Open HouseThe number of veterans deciding to start or return to college continues to rise as the Afghanistan wars wind down and more military personnel fulfill their service obligations and return to civilian status. The ranks of adult learners, those classified as at least 24 years old, also are expanding as more displaced workers look for a career change or seek additional education.

To help nontraditional students navigate the many challenges associated with the higher education decision, an information session is set for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, in the Conference Center at Penn State New Kensington. The Veterans/Adult Learners Open House provides prospective students with information on the various certificate, associate and baccalaureate degrees offered at the campus. The sessions include tips on how to finance a Penn State education.

The organizational leadership bachelor’s degree program is designed specifically as a degree completion program for adult learners. Students can earn a minimum of six credits (two three-credit courses) per semester by attending classes one night a week in an accelerated fashion. The OLEAD major can be completed at the New Kensington campus or at the Regional Learning Alliance in Cranberry.

There are numerous academic options available to veterans and adults, including selecting from more than 200 noncredit, certificate and degree programs; choosing full- or part-time status; and scheduling day or evening classes. The enrollment management staff at the campus will be on-hand to assist prospective students with application forms. The $50 application fee will be waived during the open house.

Veterans and adult learners, who comprise approximately 25 percent of the Penn State New Kensington student population, have their own space on the campus at the Adult Learner Resource Center and Lounge. The lounge includes a small library of resource books, coffee maker, refrigerator, microwave, a computer and printer, white board, table and chairs for small group study and comfortable chairs for relaxation. Penn State New Kensington strives to support these students in reaching their academic goals while maintaining a healthy life balance.

Radiological Sciences and Biomedical Engineering Technology Open HouseIn addition to the veterans and adult learners open house, the campus is hosting another open house for biomedical engineering technology and radiological sciences programs Nov. 4 for those who missed the first event on Oct. 22.

The second open house is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, at the campus. Prospective students can explore opportunities in the field of radiology and biomedical technology. The joint open house is geared to high school seniors and juniors and adult learners. Participants can review information about the programs, meet with faculty and staff, learn about financial aid and find out what the New Kensington campus has to offer. Faculty and staff will provide information on various aspects of the two health disciplines. For more information about these two disciplines, visit http://www.nk.psu.edu/Information/News/46039.htm#NEWS46039.

Application DayComplementing the open house events is Application Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10. The day is tailored for prospective students and their families. The admissions staff will help students complete the application form and answer questions about the admissions process, and those who apply will receive a waiver for the $50 application fee. In addition, prospective students who indicate New Kensington as their first preference may receive an admissions decision within a week if they bring a high school transcript and their SAT or ACT scores. Appointments are strongly recommended.

Additional November eventsTwo academic programs will also host open houses during the month of November. The business program open house will be held at 9 a.m. Nov. 5, and the administration of justice program open house will be held at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 18. Prospective students will be able to meet campus faculty and learn more about these degree programs at Penn State New Kensington.
