Civil rights class to share experience at Nov. 10 event

Students from this past spring’s Rhetoric of the Civil Rights Movement class will present “The Penn State Freedom Tour: What’s Next?” in the HUB Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Nov. 10.

The event will start with a video giving background about the class, and then students will share their experiences, including what they learned during a memorable spring break trip on which they met key components of the Civil Rights Movement. Students traveled to different cities to visit Martin Luther King Jr.’s chauffeur; various members of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC); Julian Bond, co-founder of SNCC; and several historical sights. Students also met with modern day activists and learned the troubles they face throughout the country.

Students will also discuss modern day racism and what they and their Penn State student peers can do to prevent it both on and off campus. The event will conclude with a time for questions and answers.
