School of Music welcomes lecturer from Hershey College of Medicine

Dr. Thyagarajan Subramanian of the Penn State Milton S. Hershey College of Medicine will present a lecture titled "Musician’s Cramp -- From Bach to Botox: An Interface Between Musicians and Neurologists" at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, in Esber Recital Hall on the University Park campus of Penn State. Admission is free.

The lecture will begin with a presentation of various forms of musician’s cramps using illustrative videos to demonstrate frequently misdiagnosed and poorly treated neurological problems that occur in musicians. He will then discuss the brain physiology and pathophysiology in these disorders and how they can be treated effectively.

Dr. Subramanian is professor of neurology and neural and behavioral sciences at Penn State's Milton S. Hershey College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He also serves as director of the Central Pennsylvania American Parkinson’s Disease Association's Referral and Information Center. He specializes in the comprehensive evaluation and treatment of movement disorders including Parkinson's Disease, Parkinsonism, Dystonia, Spasmodic Torticollis and Deep Brain Stimulation.

Dr. Subramanian received his fellowship in neurology from Emory University Hospital and completed his residency in neurology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. His bachelor's and master's degrees are from the University of Calicut (India).
