Tuba Euphonium Ensemble to present 'Tubaween'

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State Tuba Euphonium Ensemble will present its annual "Tubaween" concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in Esber Recital Hall. The conclusion to the month-long celebration of OcTUBAfest, the program features a performance by trumpet professor Langston J. Fitzgerald III and Percy Grainger's "The Duke of Marlborough Fanfare" conducted by Dennis Glocke. The ensemble is coached and conducted by Velvet Brown. Admission is free.

This performance will be available via livestreamed video at Penn State School of Music.

The Penn State Tuba Euphonium Ensemble, formed in the fall of 1987, has achieved success performing regionally, nationally and internationally. The group performs traditional, contemporary and popular literature composed or transcribed for the tuba/euphonium ensemble. This highly select ensemble is comprised of the finest euphonium and tuba players on campus by audition. The group has garnered praise for many featured international and national performances, including the CBS “Good Morning Show"; the 1995, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014 International Tuba and Euphonium Conferences; the 2011 and 2013 Northeast Tuba and Euphonium Conference; several appearances at the New York Brass Conference with featured soloists Brian Bowman and Toby Hanks; the 2004 and 2014 Army Tuba Euphonium Conferences in Fort Myers, Florida; the Pennsylvania Music Educator’s Conference; and with soloists Roger Behrend and Neal Corwell.

The ensemble also enjoys performing for University functions, presenting public school concerts and entertaining at various off-campus venues. The ensemble has premiered several compositions by Austrian composer Franz Cibulka and other composers such as Drew Bonner, Luke Gall and Gary Powell Nash. Many of the arrangements performed are by current and former students as well as professor Brown. Future highlighted performances of the Penn State Tuba Euphonium Ensemble include the 2015 Northeast Tuba and Euphonium Conference in Ithaca, New York. The ensemble is currently under the direction of Brown.
