UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- One of Penn State's oldest traditions continues this week as seniors vote online and in the HUB for the 2015 class gift to the University. The Class Gift Campaign program affords each graduating class the opportunity to leave its mark on its alma mater. Past class gifts include scholarships, program support and iconic landmarks like the Nittany Lion Shrine, Allen Street Gates, and Land-Grant Frescoes in Old Main.Voting begins Monday, Oct. 13, and ends Friday, Oct. 17. Seniors can place their votes either online at www.giveto.psu.edu/voteclassgift, or in person from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day on the ground floor of the HUB. Descriptions of the three gifts, and voting and pledging information will be available online and at the voting tables.Students graduating in May, August or December 2015 are eligible to vote and donate to the 2015 class gift. Seniors who pledge their general deposit to the Class Gift Campaign will have their vote counted twice. After a thorough evaluation of more than 100 proposals, a committee consisting of the 2015 Class Gift Campaign Executive Committee and University faculty and staff has selected three proposals for students to vote upon for the 2015 class gift.-- Solar Panel ArrayIn support of a vision of a more sustainable Penn State embraced by both its leadership and student body, this class gift will fund the construction of a solar panel array on the University Park campus. The first step of many to come, the solar array will serve as a renewable energy source and a valuable educational resource, and it will align with Penn State's goal to reduce average building energy use by 20 percent over the next decade. The solar array will also build awareness of our energy-reduction efforts and proclaim Penn State’s strong commitment to sustainability and a greener future.-- Alma Mater Sidewalk DisplayThe timeless words of the Penn State Alma Mater have echoed down through the generations. This class gift would celebrate the University’s official song by carving its first verse in stone as part of a sidewalk on the University Park campus. Since 1901, when it was composed by pioneering American Literature professor Fred Lewis Pattee, the Alma Mater has united students and alumni in a shared expression of love and respect for our great University. Creating the Alma Mater Sidewalk Display would give the song the prominent and permanent place that it deserves, realizing a deeply felt desire that many students and alumni have expressed over the years.-- Class of 2015 Student Success ScholarshipTo help future students overcome the challenge of affording a Penn State education, the class of 2015 would create an endowed scholarship to benefit a student in his or her final year who is in good academic standing and demonstrates the highest financial need. The University has long sought to reduce students’ financial burden, and President Eric Barron has recently reaffirmed this goal as a priority, placing a particular emphasis on helping students graduate with a degree in four years. The Student Success Scholarship would support these efforts and change the lives of many Penn Staters in the future. The 2015 class gift will be revealed at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, on the ground floor of the HUB. In addition to announcement activities organized by the Class Gift Campaign, the selected gift will be accepted on behalf of the University by Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations Rodney Kirsch. The entire Penn State community is invited to attend.Any questions or further information requests can be directed to Class Gift Campaign Executive Director Tara Bendler at ClassGift@psu.edu or Geoff Hallett in the Office of Annual Giving at gdh15@psu.edu or 814-863-2052.
