Center for Global Studies to kick off Brown Bag Lectures on Oct. 1

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Center for Global Studies at Penn State will begin its yearlong Brown Bag Lecture Series on Wednesday, Oct. 1. The fall semester lectures will take place on select Wednesdays from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. through mid-November and will feature interdisciplinary graduate research.

All students, faculty, colleagues, and friends are welcome to attend. Attendees are invited to bring lunch; coffee, tea and cookies will be provided.

-- Oct. 1 in 103 Old Botany Building: Kendra Taylor, a doctoral student in the Department of Education Policy Studies at Penn State, will present “Peace Education as a Tool to Address Youth Violence and Delinquency in Morocco.” Taylor will present data collected during a six-week peace education program that was implemented in Ksar El Kebir, Morocco, and make recommendations for combating ongoing challenges and further research.

-- Nov. 5 in 102 Kern: Pablo E. Requena, a graduate of the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba and a current doctoral student studying language science and Spanish linguistics at Penn State, will present “Child Awareness of Subtle Probabilities in Adult Language Use: Evidence from Spanish DO Pronouns.” Requena will explore variations in language acquisition and sociolinguistic differences in Spanish speaking children.

-- Nov. 12 in 103 Old Botany Building: Micah Donohue, a doctoral student in the Department of Comparative Literature, will present “Edgar Allan Poe, 1845, and the ‘Invention’ of American World Literature.” This presentation will explore writings by Poe, Cornelius Mathews and Evert A. Duyckinck, and the historical and political context that shaped these prominent authors’ views on what constitutes true American literature.
