Communications students earn sweep at Mid-Atlantic Emmys

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Entries by students from the College of Communications at Penn State completed a four-for-four sweep -- earning regional Emmy awards in college and university production categories at an awards ceremony in Philadelphia.

The winners were a weekly newscast, a sports magazine program and two separate long-form stories.

The two complete programs that won were:-- “Centre County Report,” an April 19, 2013, episode of the weekly newscast was recognized as the Best College Newscast; and 

-- “In the Game,” an episode of the sports magazine program produced by upper-level communications students was recognized as the best College Student Production - Long Form/Non-Fiction.

Individually, Christian Heilman's story about drive-in theaters fighting to stay open won in the News-General Assignment category and Patrick Woo won for Student Production/Sports for his story titled “Healing Newtown.”

Heilman and Woo earned their degrees in May.
