Penn State DuBois starts 2014 golf season strong

DUBOIS, Pa. -- The Penn State DuBois Golf Team played their first tournament of the season on Thursday, Sept. 4, and walked away tied for first place with Penn State Lehigh Valley in the field of seven teams. Penn State Lehigh Valley ended up being named tournament champion based on a tiebreaking criterion. The “Bernie Gus Invitational”, named after the long time New Kensington golf coach, was played at the Links at Spring Church and was hosted by Penn State New Kensington.

Seven full teams were represented in the first Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) tournament of the season. Top ten individual scorers for Penn State DuBois (PSUD) were Mitch Gilmore (Ridgway High School) who led the PSUD team with an 82 to earn the 5th place overall score. DuBois’ Tyler Woodard (Smethport Area High School) and Kristi Hanes, (Elk County Catholic School) were close behind, finishing tied for 6th with 83 each. Rounding out the scoring for PSUD, Justin Quiggle (St. Marys High School) and Vinnie Montanari (Redbank Valley High School) both posted 97 each, and Justin Gumpf (Big Spring High School) posted a 100 to finish the scoring.

"Tied for first or not, it was as great way to start the season," said PSUD coach Pat Lewis. “All of the conference schools were here and it is nice for our golfers to get off to a strong start," he added. "Eight of our ten golfers from last year’s PSUAC Championship team moved on to University Park, so this was a whole new group of golfers for DuBois again this year. I’m very pleased with their composure in their first collegiate golf match.”

PSUD finished with a team score of 345 to start the conference season (5-1).
