Ribbon cutting for new Penn State regional engineering suite set for Sept. 16

Faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to the unveiling of Penn State’s new regional engineering suite from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, in Penn State Great Valley’s Conference Center building.

Through a consortium consisting of Penn State Brandywine, Penn State Abington and Penn State Great Valley, undergraduate engineering students in the Philadelphia region can now complete their baccalaureate degrees without leaving the area.

This new multidisciplinary engineering design option of the general engineering degree teaches students applied concepts in electrical engineering, computer engineering, mechanical engineering and engineering design.

The first two years of foundational engineering coursework will be offered at both Penn State Brandywine and Penn State Abington, while the last two years of advanced engineering coursework will be offered at the new engineering facility at Penn State Great Valley.

The suite includes high-tech classrooms, advising offices, a fully equipped circuits lab, robotics center and a fabrication and design facility outfitted with the latest engineering technologies. This state-of-the-art facility gives students hands-on experience using professional engineering equipment and software, such as multiple 3-D printers, machining centers, a laser engraver and other shop tools. The suite’s cost was approximately $2.5 million.

The grand opening will include remarks from Vice President of Commonwealth Campuses Madlyn Hanes, College of Engineering Dean Amr Elnashai, Brandywine Chancellor Kristin Woolever, Abington Chancellor Karen Sandler, Great Valley Chancellor Craig Edelbrock and representatives from regional engineering and manufacturing companies. Following the ceremony, facility demonstrations and tours will be offered and refreshments will be served.

Penn State Great Valley is located at 30 E. Swedesford Road in Malvern. To register for this event, visit http://bit.ly/WbFn5J.
