Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence plans workshops

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence will present:

-- Two session of GA 101: First Steps in Planning a Course from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, in Room 315, Rider Building, and from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 11, in Room 201, Chambers Building. 

This interactive workshop, presented by Chas Brua, research associate and instructional consultant, and graduate consultants Stephen Van Wert and Whitney Zimmerman, is for graduate students and postdocs who will be teaching courses independently now or in the future.

Takeaways from the workshop include strategies for identifying learning goals and guidelines for writing syllabi.

-- Teaching in the U.S. Part 1: Overall Strategies for Success from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, in Room 315, Rider Building. 

This interactive workshop, presented by Meredith Doran of the Center for Language Acquisition and Chas Brua, research associate and instructional consultant, will focus on communication strategies that will be helpful for international instructors teaching at Penn State. Topics will include strategies for setting expectations, projecting both authority and approachability, and negotiating breakdowns in communication.

This workshop is the first of three in a series. Attendance at all is recommended but not required.
