UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Adam Shrager and Katie Ciccaglione, mechanical engineering undergraduate students, received awards at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Student Mechanism and Robot Design Contest.
The competition was held during the ASME International Design and Engineering Technical Conferences Aug. 17-20 in Buffalo, New York. It gave undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to showcase their ability to design and build a mechanism or a robot.
Shrager took first place in the undergraduate mechanisms category for "Design of Magnetically Activated Origami-Inspired Forceps."
He was advised by Tim Simpson, professor of mechanical engineering and industrial engineering.
Ciccaglione placed second in the undergraduate mechanisms category for "Design of a Detachment Mechanism to be used in an Endoscopic Device for Pancreatic Cancer Treatment."
Her adviser was Mary Frecker, professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Bernard M. Gordon Learning Factory.
ASME awarded Shrager $300 for first place and Ciccaglione $100 for second place. Both students also received a $100 prize from MISUMI, the contest sponsor.
Other award categories included undergraduate robotics, graduate robotics and graduate mechanisms.
