Lara Spencer to be grand marshal at Homecoming 2014

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Homecoming Executive Committee announced that Lara Spencer, co-anchor of "Good Morning America," has been selected as the grand marshal for Homecoming 2014. The reveal occurred Aug. 24 at the annual Be A Part From The Start event.

“The Homecoming Executive Committee had no problem making the selection for Penn State Homecoming Grand Marshal,” said Madison Benfield, alumni relations director. “We chose Lara because she is a positive influence on millions.”

The Homecoming Executive Committee began the selection process earlier this year, searching for a Penn State alumnus who continues to positively represent Penn State since their time at the University.

“We wanted someone that represents hard work, intellect and charisma, and Lara is all that and more,” said Claudia Bonilla, executive director.

Spencer was ultimately selected “due to her passion for Penn State, her continuous interest in University-wide activities, as well as her dedication to service,” said Benfield.

In addition to her position as co-anchor of "Good Morning America," Spencer is also the author of "I Brake For Yard Sales", a New York Times bestseller about interior design from Abrams Books. Her love of design led her to create and produce the series “Flea Market Flip” for HGTV, which is currently in its third season.

During her time at Penn State, Spencer studied broadcast journalism in the College of Communications. She was also a nationally ranked diver on the Penn State swimming and diving team. Spencer was named an All-American Athlete and was a part of the Class of 1991.

Spencer will return to University Park for the Homecoming 2014 celebrations. She will be featured in the parade and will be recognized at half time of the Homecoming football game.

“Lara is thrilled to be returning to Happy Valley this fall,” said Benfield. “She is very honored to have received such a role in Homecoming.”

Spencer joins an esteemed list of alumni who have been named Homecoming grand marshal. Others who have been honored with this title include John Amaechi (2013), and Terry and Kim Pegula (2012).

Penn State Homecoming is a student-run organization with aims to celebrate tradition and instill pride in all members of the Penn State family through active engagement of students, alumni, faculty and staff across the community. The organization is comprised of student volunteers who donate their time to creating a multitude of events that make the Homecoming celebration a yearlong event.
