Communications students garner four Mid-Atlantic Emmy nominations

A weekly newscast, a sports magazine program and two separate long-form stories -- all produced by Penn State students in the College of Communications -- were named Mid-Atlantic Emmy nominees in college and university production categories.

The two complete programs nominated are:

  •  “Centre County Report”:  an April 19, 2013, episode of the weekly newscast was named among finalists for Best College Newscast; and
  •  “In the Game”: an episode of the sports magazine program produced by upper-level communications students is a finalist for College Student Production - Long Form/Non Fiction.

Individually, Christian Heilman put together as story about drive-in theaters fighting to stay open that was nominated in the News-General Assignment category and Patrick Woo was nominated for Student Production/Sports for his story titled “Healing Newtown.”

“I’m excited to see our students recognized for their hard work. For young journalists to have an Emmy nomination or an Emmy Award on their resume is like gold,” said Steve Kraycik, director of student television and online operations. “It’s something professional journalists strive for and it continues to show the high quality of work Penn Staters are producing.”

Award winners will be named Sept. 20 in Philadelphia.
