University Park community urged to be mindful of pedestrians who are blind

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- From July 13 to Aug. 2, Penn State is hosting a summer academy for students with visual disabilities who are transitioning to a college setting. The Summer Academy for Students who are Blind or Visually Impaired: Enhancing Independence Skills for Students Transitioning to Post-Secondary Education will enroll about 25 students. The independence skills to be taught include navigating around a campus.

Drivers are reminded of their obligation to yield the right-of-way -- slow down and prepare to stop -- to blind pedestrians, whether they are using a white cane or a guide dog, or are being led by others.  For more on state driving laws regarding blind pedestrians, visit this website.
