Members of Penn State College of Medicine’s entering class will gather at the Hershey Lodge in the Great American Hall at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, to begin their medical careers by donning their first white coats during the annual White Coat Ceremony. A light reception will immediately follow.
The entering medical student class will be presented and “cloaked” with their white coats by faculty members. Following the distribution of the coats, the students will recite an Oath of Student Professionalism, which they will have written together in the days leading up to the ceremony.
The College of Medicine initiated its annual White Coat Ceremony in 1996 with funding support from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, a public foundation fostering humanism in medicine. A white coat ceremony or similar rite of passage takes place at more than 90 percent of schools of medicine and osteopathy in the United States.
Faculty, staff and students are welcome to attend. No tickets are necessary for this event.
