College of Medicine graduate student to speak at TED Talk

Jordan Gaines Lewis, a rising fourth-year neuroscience student at Penn State College of Medicine, has been selected to participate in a TED Talk in New York City. Gaines does science writing on the side with her blog Gaines, on Brains, and she contributes to other publications. She is the founder and current editor-in-chief of Lions Talk Science, a research blog for the College of Medicine.

Gaines’ TED Talk will be held on Tuesday, July 8, at Joe’s Pub at The Public. In May, she submitted a brief audition video that introduced her topic.

“I’ve always enjoyed watched TED Talks, and I saw that they were accepting applications,” said Gaines. “I thought to myself, ‘Why not? I’ve got nothing to lose’ and decided to apply on a whim.”

In a six-minute talk, Gaines will discuss theories behind the perceptions of time flying faster as we age. The talk will be based on an article that she had contributed to Scientific American MIND in December.

Although she is a science writer, Jordan has never done anything like this before.

“While I will still be extraordinarily nervous the day of the talk, I also feel confident going in with all the experience I’ve had speaking and presenting my research as a student here at the College of Medicine,” she said.
