UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics’ LED Nittany Lion logos recently installed on Beaver Stadium videoboards will be lit for the first time at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17.

The 35-foot by 25-foot backlit logos were placed on the north and south videoboards last month as part of Beaver Stadium’s videoboard installation project. About 1,400 LED lights will illuminate the white portion of each 6,500-pound logo, giving the illusion that the Nittany Lion is floating.

After the initial lighting, the logos will be set to automatically turn on at dusk and shut off at 11 p.m. daily. During late-start home games, the logos may remain lit past 11 p.m., said Marv Bevan Jr., project manager for Penn State. “We can keep them on until we turn the parking lights off.”

Although there is a chance of rain Tuesday evening, Bevan said the lighting will happen regardless since the lights are run automatically. “Weather has no effect on it,” he said.

The videoboard structures measure 156 feet by 42 feet. Before this year’s project, the original videoboards had been installed in Beaver Stadium prior to the 2000 (north) and 2001 (south) seasons, respectively. Construction on the videoboards is scheduled for completion prior to the Nittany Lions’ home opener on Sept. 6 vs. Akron.
