College of Nursing offers continuing education courses for nurses

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The Penn State College of Nursing’s Office of Outreach and Continuing Education will offer continuing education courses for registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) beginning June 6.

Both courses will be held in the College of Nursing Simulation Laboratory on the University Park campus. This allows nurses the opportunity to practice on high-tech mannequins that simulate symptoms, diseases and conditions that they are likely to encounter in clinical settings.

A six-session course on Critical Care Nursing for RNs will be held June 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21. Participants will obtain hands-on experience with advanced critical care skills in a variety of areas and strengthen nursing judgment to impact positive patient outcomes. Registered nurses will receive 48 contact hours upon completion of the program. Pamela Lawson, instructor in nursing at Penn State, will teach the course.

Two courses on Intravenous Therapy will be held July 1 for RNs and LPNs. Simulation practice with mannequins and equipment is incorporated into the courses. The morning course will cover Peripheral IV and Phlebotomy, while the afternoon course will focus on Central Line IV Therapy. Registered nurses will receive 3.5 contact hours for each session attended. Licensed practical nurses who complete both courses may be eligible for a certificate of completion approved by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. The individual sessions will be taught by Penn State nursing instructors Beth Cutezo and Christopher Garrison.

The Penn State College of Nursing is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Those interested in participating can register online or get more information on the College of Nursing website.
