Smeal College alumnus helps student organizations develop leadership skills

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Involvement in student organizations can provide many students with leadership experience before they graduate. To further bolster student leaders’ skills, the Penn State Smeal College of Business Career and Corporate Connections (C&CC) office collaborated with 2004 Smeal marketing alumnus Roger Osorio to provide student leaders with a series of workshops to help strengthen their leadership skills and run more effective organizations.

“Roger operates a number of independent ventures with a focus on student development and leadership skills, and we reached out to him to work with us on further developing some of our key student leaders,” said Meg Handley, director of the C&CC office. “It’s always exciting when we’re able to tap into our vast alumni network to provide an impactful experience to students.”

Student leaders gained insights on how to think about an organization’s mission and vision more strategically, how to lead an organization that delivers value and how to inspire action in executive board members.

“One of our primary missions in Career and Corporate Connections is to provide opportunities for our students to develop leadership skills that will differentiate them in their careers.”

Osorio also made himself available to incoming student organization presidents for one-on-one executive coaching sessions. In these sessions, he helped guide students in thinking about their 2014-15 strategy and plan, which each Smeal student organization must submit this summer.

“One of our primary missions in Career and Corporate Connections is to provide opportunities for our students to develop leadership skills that will differentiate them in their careers,” said Handley. “We’re privileged to be able to utilize Roger’s expertise to help take our student organization leaders to the next level. As our student leaders improve, the quality and value of the whole organization will as well.”

Osorio is the founder and chief leadership officer of DynamikoU, a company that works with colleges and universities to help prepare students to be dynamic leaders in the 21st century. His interest in student leadership was piqued during his senior year at Smeal, when he served as the Penn State Marketing Association president. Since graduating he has continued to mentor students at Penn State. In 2010, he earned a master’s degree in psychology with a focus on leadership development and executive coaching.
