Continuing Education will offer development courses for school nurses

The Penn State College of Nursing and Outreach and Penn State Beaver will offer two courses specifically developed for school nurses. New courses are developed annually to include current topics, and participants can earn Act 48 credits. Both courses will be video conferenced from Penn State University Park.

“Legal and Professional Issues in School Nursing” is a three-credit course that will be offered 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, July 14 through 18. It will explore the synthesis and analysis of the legal and professional issues faced by school nurses and other professionals as well as the impact on delivery of health care in the school environment.

“Neurological Assessment Skills for the School Nurse” is a one-credit course that will be offered 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, June 25 and 26. The course offers a basic review of the neurological system and specific information on seizures and concussion injuries related to the school age child. Various neurological assessment scales will be reviewed and resources for families, staff, and community will be offered. Strategies and interventions to prevent head injuries will also be discussed.
