A handful of Penn State students and three alternative-fuel vehicles will represent the University’s award-winning EcoCAR effort during activities for National Alternative Fuel Vehicle Day on Friday, Oct. 17, in the Pittsburgh area.

The Penn State representatives -- with the team’s award-winning Chevrolet Malibu from EcoCAR2 and two Chevrolet Camaros that provide the centerpiece of the EcoCAR3 challenge -- will be among the participants in the session, which showcases more than 35 alternative-fuel vehicles at the Community College of Allegheny County-West Hills Center.

Activities include concurrent sessions about all alternative fuels and technologies, the alternative-fuel vehicles themselves and ride-and-drive opportunities.

The Penn State Advanced Vehicle Team has participated in national competitions since 1988. Nearly 70 students, faculty and staff from across colleges and majors at Penn State contribute to the effort each year. Penn State placed third nationally in EcoCAR2, which challenged teams to convert the Malibu and ended in June.

EcoCAR3, a four-year program that runs through 2018, tests students from 16 different universities to re-engineer a Camaro to increase fuel efficiency, degrease harmful emissions and maintain performance, safety and consumer acceptability.

Coordinated by Pittsburgh Region Clean Cities, the day is one of more than 100 being conducted concurrently across the United States.
