Engineering students and faculty receive Graduate School awards

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Five engineering students and one faculty member were honored this spring with awards from the Graduate School.

Yanhui Zhao, engineering science and mechanics, and Md Tarekul Alam, mechanical engineering, received the Alumni Association Dissertation Award. It provides funding and recognition to outstanding full-time doctoral students who have passed their comprehensive exams and have received approval of the dissertation topic. Each student received $5,000 and was recognized at the Graduate School Alumni Society's recognition program on April 5.

SooHyun Park, bioengineering, and Yuliang Xie, chemical engineering, were Harold K. Schilling Dean’s Graduate Scholarship recipients. Created in memory of the former professor and dean of the Graduate School, the award recognizes outstanding graduate students whose course of study is relevant to science, religion and ethics.

Joshua Allen, environmental engineering, received the Thomas and June Beaver Fund Award. It provides recognition and financial assistance to outstanding graduate students who are performing industry-sponsored research.

Peggy Johnson, professor and head of civil engineering, received the Howard B. Palmer Mentoring Award. The award is presented to a full-time faculty member who demonstrates "effective mentoring through guiding and nurturing the collegial and professional development of junior faculty."
