Penn State to host Virginia Tech in 2014 ACC/Big Ten Challenge

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Virginia Tech will visit the Bryce Jordan Center for the 2014 ACC/Big Ten Challenge on the final day of the three-night annual event presented by Dick's Sporting Goods, Wednesday, Dec. 3. Tip times and networks will be announced by ESPN in August.

ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 14 games of the three-day event matching top college basketball programs playing for conference supremacy and the Commissioners Cup. All 14 games will also be available via WatchESPN.

Three of the games will feature a showdown between teams ranked in an early preseason top 25 poll: No. 2 Duke at No. 4 Wisconsin, No. 25 Iowa at No. 6 North Carolina and No. 21 Syracuse at No. 24 Michigan. Additional teams in the Challenge that made the poll include No. 7 Virginia, No. 8 Louisville and No. 18 Michigan State.

All 14 Big Ten teams and 14 of the 15 ACC teams will participate in the 2014 Challenge.

Penn State and Virginia Tech have met seven times in program history, dating back to the 1920-21 season, with the Hokies holding a 6-1 advantage. The teams last faced each other in the 2007 Challenge with the Nittany Lions earning one of the Big Ten's three wins in a 66-61 victory in the Jordan Center.

Penn State has won four of its last seven ACC/Big Ten Challenge games and holds a 5-8 record in 13 Challenge appearances. Each of the last two Challenges have ended in a tie (6-6) with the title remaining with the Big Ten after it had won for the previous three years in a row. In 2011, the conference posted a dominating 8-4 tally, the Big Ten's largest winning margin and a mark equaling the most number of wins for a conference in the series. The ACC also won eight games in 2006 and 2007 and won the initial 10 Challenges. The ACC has won 10 of the 15 Challenges.

In 2010, Penn State became the first Big Ten program to win Challenge games in three-consecutive seasons. Penn State has previously won games vs. Virginia Tech (2007), at Georgia Tech (2008) and at Virginia (2009). The Lions also tallied wins vs. Boston College (2011) and Clemson (1999). They fell to Boston College (73-61) in their last home Challenge appearance in 2012 and to Pittsburgh, 78-69, last season in the Petersen Events Center.
