Writing academy at Penn State Harrisburg available for area students

The 2014 Young Writers Academy (YWA) will be held from 9 a.m. to noon June 23 to 27 at Penn State Harrisburg.

A week-long summer program for writers in grades 1 through 12, the program offers students the opportunity to extend their writing skills beyond the classroom while meeting and working with other writers.

The academy offers students a unique journey through poetry, creative nonfiction and a college application essay. The program includes opportunities for students to interact with peers, teachers, digital tools and mentor texts.

Teachers will focus on building students’ confidence, community and writing skills through student-driven learning. Students will also network with national Writing Project Teacher Consultants.

The academy closes with a Gallery Walk and Coffeehouse open to families, friends and school administrators to celebrate the efforts of YWA participants.
