WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. -- Five graphic design students at Pennsylvania College of Technology recently earned American Advertising Awards in the American Advertising Federation Northeast Pennsylvania competition.

The students earned three silver, three gold and "Best in Show" honors, capturing seven of the 13 student awards presented by the organization. Additionally, one student’s work has been selected for publication in an international design annual.

Erin M. Schlesinger, a senior from Lock Haven, won the Student Best in Show honor for her “Broken Mirror” beer packaging, which also earned a gold American Advertising Award, formerly known as the ADDYs. Schlesinger earned a second gold American Advertising Award for her “Leave No Trace” annual report.

Schlesinger’s creation has also been honored with a merit award from HOW magazine, one of the most widely read and respected magazines in the graphic design field. Her “Broken Mirror” piece has been published in HOW’s international design annual.

Also winning a gold American Advertising Award for Penn College was Kimberly S. Filko, a senior from State College, for her “King Lear” poster.

Silver American Advertising Awards were awarded to Morgan A. Hummel, a senior from Northumberland, for his “Motorino” stationery package; Morgan T. Jennings, a junior from Canton, for his “Animal Farm” book jacket; and Madison M. Miller, a senior from Danville, for her “American Farmland Trust” annual report.

“We heard from several professional designers about how impressed they are with the work being done at Penn College, especially in the areas of typography and concept,” said Nicholas L. Stephenson, instructor of graphic design, who accompanied the students to the recent awards dinner. “What makes our program so strong is that our students approach, and ultimately solve, design problems with a balance of form, function and ideation.

“Several of our students received job and internship leads and had the opportunity to speak and network with professional designers. Overall, it was a great evening with our students being recognized for the extraordinary design work they do here at Penn College.”
