College of Education announces commencement speaker

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.— Joan Ferrini-Mundy will be the speaker for Penn State College of Education's spring 2014 commencement program at 12:30 p.m. on May 11, at the Bryce Jordan Center on the University Park campus.

Ferrini-Mundy is currently the assistant director of education and human resources for the National Science Foundation (NSF), a position she has held since 2011, serving as a member of the U.S. Government Senior Executive Service.

She received her bachelor of science in mathematics education, a masters of science in mathematics and her doctorate in mathematics education from the University of New Hampshire.

As an educator, Ferrini-Mundy taught high-school mathematics and co-founded the SummerMath for Teachers program at Mount Holyoke College. She served on the mathematics faculty at the University of New Hampshire from 1983 through 1999.

Ferrini-Mundy continued her career in higher education as a faculty member in Michigan State University’s (MSU) departments of mathematics and teacher education. She was named a university distinguished professor of mathematics education. From 1999 through 2010, Ferrini-Mundy served as associate dean for science and mathematics education in the College of Natural Science at MSU.

Ferrini-Mundy has had a number of public policy-related positions, including as director of the Mathematical Sciences Education Board at the National Research Council and in various positions at the NSF.

Additionally, Ferrini-Mundy has served on numerous panels and boards dealing with education, including the President's National Mathematics Advisory Panel, the Federal Coordination in STEM Education Task Force, the Board of Directors of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Board of Governors of the Mathematical Association of America, and the American Mathematical Society’s Committee for Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education. She was president of the organization Women and Mathematics Education.

Ferrini-Mundy’s research interests include calculus teaching and learning, mathematics teacher learning and STEM education policy.
