Clarinet Masterclass with Michele Gingras, April 10

Michele Gingras, the clarinet professor at Miami University (Ohio), will present a masterclass for Penn State clarinet students 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, in 110 Music Building I on the University Park campus of Penn State. Admission is free.

Michele Gingras joined the Miami University faculty in 1986. She earned her master's degree at Northwestern University with Robert Marcellus, a Premier Prix in clarinet performance and in chamber music from the Montreal Music Conservatory with Rafaele Masella, and she studied in the doctoral program at Indiana University with Bernard Portnoy and Earl Bates.

Professor Gingras is an active recitalist, author, recording artist, and clinician. She performed as a soloist, as a member of the Miami Wind Quintet, and as a klezmer musician in Australia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Taiwan, Singapore, and throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. She served ten summers as principal clarinet with the Echternach Festival Orchestra in Luxembourg. Previously, she was principal solo clarinet with the Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra (Chile). Gingras has recorded over a dozen compact discs and ten solo recitals for Radio-Canada. Additionally, she recorded a commissioned duo with Emmy-Award clarinetist Richard Stoltzman for MMC Recordings in Boston (2008).

Her publications include more than 200 articles and reviews for The Clarinet, CASS, Australian Clarinet and Saxophone, The Instrumentalist, NACWPI, Canadian Winds, and other magazines. She also translated a 550-page scholarly book about saxophonist Jean-Marie Londeix published by Roncorp. Her two books, Clarinet Secrets—52 Performance Strategies for the Advanced Clarinetist and echo, were published by Scarecrow Press. In 2007, she published a widely-distributed “Survival Guide” pamphlet about single reed instrument care as well as online educational material for Rico International. Since 2008, she has authored a clarinet advice column in the magazine Australian Clarinet and Saxophone.
