Literary festival to feature readings from poet John Hoppenthaler

Penn State Brandywine will hold its 18th annual Litapalooza Literary Festival with readings from guest poet John Hoppenthaler at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, April 10, in the Tomezsko Classroom Building lounge. During this public event, students are encouraged to share their own creative works by reading, reciting, chanting and narrating.

Hosted by Distinguished Professor of English Adam J. Sorkin and the English department each April in honor of National Poetry Month, Litapalooza gives guests an opportunity to hear from renowned poets while also sharing their own original works.

The campus’ student literary publication, "Penn In Hand," also will be distributed at the event. "Penn In Hand" is a collection of students’ artistic works, such as poems, photographs, drawings and paintings, that is published by Penn State Brandywine students and the English department.

Hoppenthaler’s books of poetry include "Anticipate the Coming Reservoir," "Lives of Water" and "Domestic Garden." His work has been featured in several textbooks and journals such as Ploughshares, Virginia Quarterly Review, McSweeney's Internet Tendency, Southern Review, Christian Science Monitor, Barrow Street, The Laurel Review, The Florida Review, West Branch, The Literary Review and many more.

Currently, he serves as an associate professor of English at East Carolina University where he primarily teaches and researches creative writing, American literature and contemporary and modern poetry. Hoppenthaler earned his bachelor of science degree from the State University of New York at Brockport and his master of fine arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University.   This event is free and light refreshments will be served.
