UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Margaret Eimers, a senior majoring in psychology at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, and Chelsea Miller, a senior majoring in supply chain management in the Smeal College of Business, have been named recipients of the 2014 Ralph Dorn Hetzel Memorial Award.
Named for Penn State’s 10th president, the Hetzel Award recognizes a combination of high scholastic attainment together with good citizenship, and participation and leadership in student activities.
Eimers, from Erie, Pa., is president of the Penn State Behrend Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, has served as vice president of the Society of Undergraduate Economists and is a member of Psi Chi International Psychology Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society and the National Society of Leadership and Success. She is a Fast Start Friends peer mentor, has served as an ambassador for adult student open houses and is a career counseling intern at the Academic and Career Planning Center. Off campus, she chairs the Superintendency Committee of the Erie/Meadville District of the Western Pa. Conference of the United Methodist Church.
“Many adult students struggle to find a work-school-life balance, but Maggie excels in her various roles, often taking on leadership responsibilities,” a nominator said. Eimers has a 3.94 grade point average, was a finalist for the 2013 Athena Erie Young Professional Award and was awarded the 2012 Penn State USA Today Student Leadership Award and the Penn State Behrend T. Reed Ferguson Award.
Miller, from Wysox, Pa., is president of the student chapter of the Operations Management Association and secretary/webmaster for the Penn State chapter of the Council for Supply Chain Management Professionals. She has served as a communications committee member for THON, the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, and as an eco representative for the Campus Sustainability Office, helping students living in residence halls to engage in environmentally friendly practices. While maintaining a 3.91 grade point average, she has served internships at ConocoPhillips Company in Houston, Texas, and BASF Chemical Corporation in Florham Park, N.J., and a co-op experience at Mondelez International in Wilkes-Barre.
