New chief quality officer appointed for Medical Center

Dr. Andrew S. Resnick has been appointed to lead quality improvement efforts as chief quality officer at Penn State Hershey, effective April 21. Resnick joins Penn State Hershey from the University of Pennsylvania (Penn), where he currently serves as chief surgical quality officer and has helped improve quality outcomes for more than 10 years.

Resnick earned his bachelor of arts degree from Dartmouth College and his doctor of medicine degree from Yale University School of Medicine. He did his surgical residency and fellowship at Penn and holds a masters of business administration from The Wharton School at Penn. Since 2007, he has served in the roles of assistant professor of surgery at Penn, attending surgeon at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and executive director of the Penn Medicine Clinical Simulation Center. While in these roles, he has held a number of leadership positions related to quality improvement.

At Penn, Resnick led initiatives to prevent surgical site infections, health care-associated infections, and readmissions; helped coordinate improvement in care transitions; and improved communication between physicians and nurses. As part of an emphasis on patient-centered care, he helped create patient-centered nursing rounds, add low-tech and high-tech media to the communication pathways of patients with their physicians and nurses, and implement a discharge time-out that involved direct patient and attending dialogue.

As chief quality officer at Penn State Hershey, Resnick will provide leadership, oversight, and support for activities related to clinical quality measurement and performance improvement for the Medical Center. He will also work closely in addressing quality and clinical performance issues system wide with Dr. Greg Caputo, chief quality officer for Penn State Hershey Medical Group, and Dr. Fred Michel, chief medical officer for the Medical Group. Resnick also will develop and oversee an institution-wide continuous quality improvement program.
